The idea for Arbor
Day originally came from Nebraska. A visit to Nebraska today wouldn’t
disclose that the state was once a treeless plain. Yet it was the lack
of trees there that led to the founding of Arbor Day in the 1800s.
Since then they have been busy with rain forest rescue, reforestation
of National Parks, helping cities become more green through their “tree
city” programs, and educational programs are fighting against global
warming.
Malaria is a disease caused
by the blood parasite Plasmodium, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.
Infected humans experience flu-like symptoms that can result in coma
and death. Malaria, from the Medieval Italian words mala aria or “bad
air,” infects more than 500 million people a year and kills more than a
million— one person dies about every 30 seconds. The disease is
particularly devastating in Africa, where it is a leading killer of
children. Despite the magnitude of the problem, there is a simple and
cost-effective solution to prevent malaria deaths. For every $10
donation, they purchase a bed net, deliver it to a family, and explain
its use. Bed nets work by creating a protective barrier against
mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur.
I have had the opportunity to work with and see this
organization in action. A few years ago a hurricane ravaged an area
just to the North and West of where we live. They mobilized a team from
area churches of volunteers to go out and patch roofs, clear debris,
and deliver much needed supplies such as baby food, diapers, ice and
food to people who were stranded and devastated by the storm. We were a
part of that group. For over 35 years, Samaritan’s Purse has followed
Christ’s command by going to the aid of the world’s poor, sick, and
suffering. They are an effective means of reaching hurting people in
countries around the world with food, medicine, and other assistance.
